This weekend saw the return to live music for me. After about a year's absence from seeing live music apart from Kevin Bloody Wilson!) I went to Coventry to the free Godiva music festival for the Saturday line-up.
Well, we turned up slightly late, but I got to see four songs by Maps (who were excellent), a couple by The Noisettes (didn;t really do it for me), then sets by The Cribs (good but I was put off by the bouncy 14 year olds), and finally Super Furry Animals who were entertaining (but not the best set I have seen them do).
It is so much better seeing a band live. The last proper concert I went to saw The Longcut headlining and I was amazed at their set up (the singer running between the front of stage to sing and play a small keyboard and the back of the stage to sung and play drums). Maps sounded like a shoegazing revival with electronic beats. Ok, that's still what I think but again I was in awe at seeing three guys at the front signing in harmony and playing a range of electronic instruments and banging percussion, with an excellent drummer too.
I blogged about their album and video here
But to see them live, check out this video:
And others, more here.
I have previously posted the video for Men's Needs here. Here is the video for and oldie, Hey Scenesters which was their opener.
Those who know me may be amused to know that I lost my shoe during Hey Scenesters in the "moshpit" but managed to get it back by the end of the song . . .
Super Furry Animals opened with the truly excellent Slow Life and finished with the awesome (but cut down version without the live techno bit at the end) of The Man Don't Give A F. However, my favourite this time was Receptacle for the Respectable (a song in five parts) during which singer Gruff Rhys ate some celery simply for the sound effect . . .
The Enemy were also there but I didn't really see much of them.
